“Red alert!  Battle stations!!
Dad yelled out those commands and everyone moved instantly.
“Patch, you and Mioshi take Otto to his room.”
“No, Dad, I want to help!”
17-year-old Otto insisted.
 “Son, you’re hurt badly and--”
“Dad, you see what they did to me.  If they get inside the Lexington, they’ll do this to all of us.  We’ve got to stop them.”

Star Trek absolutely fascinated me when I was introduced to the long running TV shows.  I was not really into the monsters and creepy things.  I mean that was OK, but what absolutely captured my interest was the starship Enterprise and the crew aboard it.  I grew up watching closet-sized space capsules clinging to rockets to get them into space.  The idea of a majestic space vehicle, the size of an aircraft carrier, with hundreds of people from all races aboard her getting along perfectly together to explore the stars, armed with amazing equipment and weapons was wondrous to me.  I so admired Gene Roddenberry, the creator of that brilliant world of creativity.
For the longest time I wanted to write an actual episode or a movie script for Star Trek.  But I knew the producers were flooded with scripts and ideas for Trek.  Then one day it occurred to me to create a tribute to Star Trek that was not a Star Trek story.  The more I thought about it, the more I knew I was on the right track.  I would be able to do what I do best—focus the story on and about young folks and their world of fun and problems.  But it would all engage my favorite TV show meshing the richness of both entities.

And I think I pulled it off.

Captain Father is my salute and appreciation to Star Trek and the American family.  And if I can share a secret, of all the characters I’ve created in all my books and stories, the only one I wanted to be was Edward Rockwell, Captain Father.
